While not the most powerful, and not the most accurate, they are among the best pumpers. They can hold a dime sized group at 20 meters, they can break through a 1 and a half pine board consistently at 20 meters, they will pass the gallon jug of water behind the bottom of a steel soup can test consistently.

I am speaking of the Daisy 901, Daisy 880, and Winchester 77x/77xs multi pump air rifles.

The Daisy 880 is a Proven Design:

In 1972 Daisy introduced there first high power adult air rifle, called the Daisy 880. The first version was smooth bore, though that did not last long before it became rifled. Since its introduction the Daisy 880 has been proving itself as a good hunting air rifle.

At the time of its introduction the Daisy 880 was a magnum air rifle. Still is, though now it is at the lower end of the magnum power scale, do to the useless rifles that can do super sonic.

The Daisy 880 is a 9FPE air rifle with the correct pellets. That is pretty powerful for a .177 caliber pneumatic rifle of any kind, beat out only by the Crosman Legacy 1000 in multi pump pneumatic rifles, the PCP’s that are more powerful are way to expensive to be worth it, and the springers that are more powerful are more of a bad joke.

About the Design of the Daisy 880:

The Daisy 880 is one of the best designed multi pump rifles on the market, ever (to date).

The pump linkage and leaver is designed to minimize pumping effort, to an extreme point, while still compressing a lot of air. The air chamber is as close to ideal in size as is possible, and shaped so that it funnels into the transfer port thus making the air flow as smooth as possible when firing the rifle. The exhaust poppet seal is lifted away from the transfer port from the opposite side of the air chamber, and is well balanced in how the pressure acts on it. The transfer port leads into the barrel at an angle toward the direction of fire, thus minimizing the effect of corners on air flow. And the hammer pulls the exhaust poppet completely open and keeps it there until the gun is cocked again.

The power plant is about as well designed as is possible. The only improvements are reversing the law suite inspired limiter slot and flat spring. Other than that the only thing that could be done to improve things is to have a higher volume pump. Now there are other things that can improve the power, though they are the kinds of things that would increase the retail price of the rifle, thus making them best left to the after-market airgun modifiers (airgun smiths).

The Daisy 901 and Winchester 77x:

Through the years Daisy has produced premium versions of the Daisy 880, that are all still exactly the same as the Daisy 880 inside, just better stocks, receivers, sights, barrel stabilization, etc. These models all have 9 as the first digit of there model number. The current premium version is the Daisy 901.

The Winchester is just a Daisy 880 with a thumb-hole stock.

So functionally these are identical to the Daisy 880, 100%.

How do These Daisy Rifles Stack Against the Competition?

Daisy tends not to come out with a bunch of new models for marketing, for the most part they stick with what works releasing new stuff when there is something new that is worthwhile. This holds true for these rifles.

Up until June of 2016 (last year), these were the most powerful .177 caliber multi pump rifles on the market for at least the last 20 years. And even now there is only one more powerful, the Crosman Legacy 1000.

In accuracy these have always been way better than there price indicates. This continues to hold true. My Crosman Legacy 1000’s are a little more accurate, though not by much.

And there is not another multi pump air rifle on the market that can produce the power and accuracy with as easy of a pumping effort, there never has been another.

My Recommendations:

If you do not have any trouble pumping the Crosman Legacy 1000, it is the best deal in .177 caliber multi pump air rifles there is. It is the most powerful of the entire pack, it is the most accurate of the pack. Though get it before Crosman cheaps out on something and reduces the effective power (like they have done with all there multi pump rifles).

The Daisy 880 and those based on it 100%, have never been cheapened, they are still powerful and accurate rifles. As such they are always worth recommending. They are easier to pump than the Crosman Legacy 1000, which can be helpful to those that are not able to pump the Crosman Legacy over many shots.

If you go with a Daisy, the Daisy 901’s composite stocks and receiver housing does seem a little sturdier than the plastic of the 880. Though the Daisy 880 plastic has proven itself to last a long time. The Daisy 901 is slightly more difficult to pump than the Daisy 880 do to a shorter pump lever, though still a lot easier than any of the Crosman multi pump rifles.
